In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
