Dallas Cowboys Owner Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Spectators

The NFL has levied a hefty $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.

Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”

League Precedent for Owner Penalties

This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples involve:

  • Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the fine manageable for the wealthy proprietor.

Recent Issues and Media Spotlight

The incident follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who faced widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded key defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a central subject in a streaming series that explored his influence in developing the Dallas franchise into the globe’s highest-worth sports franchise, despite its recent championship drought.

The NFL’s decision to fine Jones underscores its ongoing effort to uphold professional conduct among all team officials, irrespective of their position or wealth.
