The band have called into a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album came out of a time of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that strange liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words detail endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed toughness demanded a new sound – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's openness fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.

A former partner left Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

One can easily sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international audience.

But the band will consistently be their primary commitment.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still making music."
